But as with Job, right in the midst of his darkest day, Jeremiah inexplicably broke into a song of hope so beautiful, so profound, that it has shone in the darkness like a wide harvest moon for three thousand years.
Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the LORD'S great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, "The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him." The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD. (Lamentations 3:21 - 26)
How many slump-shouldered travelers down through the long ages have warmed their hands and hearts at this fire? How many believers, through tears or with overpowering joy, have sung "Great Is Thy Faithfulness"? How many discouraged Chris tians have rolled out of bed in the morning and found a fresh supply of hope and strength for the day by quoting, "His compassions never fail. They are new every morning."
It was just seventy-nine words (in English), but it became a ruby of wisdom and hope for Jeremiah - and millions upon countless millions of believers have held that ruby up to the light and found a double-handful of stick-with-it when they needed it most.
